BODY & SELF
_____________________________________
Difficult relationships with the body can arise for many reasons. We live in a culture that continually tells us how we should look, feel, and be, encouraging comparison, self-surveillance, and dissatisfaction. Alongside this, many people learn to disconnect from their bodies. This may be because their body has become associated with shame, control, or not being good enough.
As an embodied psychotherapist, I support clients to re-establish their relationship with the body, helping them feel more at home in themselves. As Susie Orbach reminds us, “When we are not at home in our bodies, we are not at home in ourselves.”
Learning to listen to the body with curiosity rather than judgement, restoring a sense of agency, and developing a more compassionate and integrated relationship with the body as it is, not as it is supposed to be, are central to this work.
My ongoing training in Somatic Experiencing informs how I work with the body and the nervous system.
